Smoke monster tied to the ground

So I’m guessing the smoke monster is somehow tied to the island to the degree that it can’t “fly” up high enough to go over that electric boundary fence.

This would seem to be the only explanation for why the fence would stop it (assuming that it did, and it wasn’t an act), and it would fit with other appearances such as when it tried to drag Locke into a hole that it appeared to be “reaching up” from.

The only part that would not make sense would be the footage from the beginning of the show where people say that it shows the smoke monster flying up and destroying the plane. I don’t remember this at all, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. The only thing I did see was a frame-by-frame image of the smoke monster going through the turbine right before it blew up, but that was when it was on the ground. They may have shown a similar shot while the plane was still in the air as well, but I don’t remember it. Even if they did though, I think since it was not visible to the unaided viewer (in normal speed) it’s safe for them to ignore that and decide that it didn’t happen, since they’ve never referenced it in the show itself.

After last nights episode with the parachuter stating that they were all dead, I believe the Island is purgatory. That would explain the monster “devil”, John being able to walk, and some leaving the island such as the others and the father/son. These people seem to be dealing with some issues, maybe once they are resolved they move on.

The smoke monster lifted echo at least higher than the 8 or 10 feet of the sonic fence. No reason it shouldve been stopped by it.

    htb: sure there is.

I could lift something around 7 ft in the air, even if my feet were tied to the ground. If I were the Lost smoke monster I could probably lift something much higher; that doesn’t mean that my feet aren’t still tied to the ground. And (assuming I’m tied to the ground), it would be impossible for me to completely cross over a fence that’s even two feet high, because my feet could not clear it if they can’t leave the ground; simple as that.

Go back and rewatch that Eko scene you’re referring to. It definitely reaches very high up in the air, but it never shows any separation/disconnection between the smoke monster and the ground, and I can’t help but think that’s intentional.

Of course, now that we’ve seen Patchy again, we have a much more likely reason that the fence does stop the smoke monster even at heights above the top of the fence, which is that the fence wasn’t actually turned on when they climbed over it. If it were turned on, for all we know the barrier extends farther up than we can see, far enough to prevent the smoke monster from passing.

I just watch the show. I don’t research and meanings, I am simply an observer. I believe the smoke monster is attached to the island and the island is what gives it it’s powers. A non-attached smoke cloud would just dissipate or float away. So no matter how high it travels, being connected to the ground would keep it from going over the fence. However, reaching over the fence is another story and remember that the I.Q. of a smoke cloud can only be so high.
