12 connections Lost has with Silent Hill

Silent Hill, the movie adaptation is soon out (21st April), and being the avid Lost and Silent Hill fan I am, I could not help but compare Lost to Silent Hill the first time I watched Lost. I thought I should share those thoughts here. I know this is reaching the boarder line of what I should post on this blog, but I thought some of you might be interested.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying one plagiarised the other, but I feel there are a quite a few parallels to Lost and the psychological horror game series that would be interesting to bring up. Some of these may be very farfetched, but I hope you’ll get the general idea.

Here’s the quick breakdown:

1 – Both appear to have a group of “others” that guard over the area. (Lost – others/an island, SH– cult/a town)

2 – Children appear to be special, possibly due to their innocence. (Lost-Walt and the other kids in the tail section of the plane, SH-Alessa/Cheryl/Laura)

3 – Both the island and Silent Hill appear to have drawn most character there for a reason; seemingly it also has a strong connection with their pasts. They are reminded about events of their pasts during the events of both series’.

4 – There are several elements of mystery that are not necessarily controlled by the others/cult, and we, the viewers/players have not found out why yet. (E.g. Lost-The dark cloud, the “incident, the polar bear and the disease, SH- various back stories we read about in the SH games, and the actual religion of the cult who is God and what is really the deal between Samael and Metatron?)

5 – People “gain” new abilities or are cured of something, realising they have something in them they never knew they had. (E.g. Lost-Locke, SH-Heather,James)

6 – Mystical symbols/hieroglyphs appear at random sections and appear to have some greater significance. They mean something, but as of yet, they have not been fully explained. (Lost-the numbers, hieroglyphs, the blast door map. SH-Seal of Metatron, Olympic symbols appearing in SH1 like Och, Phul.. etc.)

7 – There are ongoing discussions between characters particularly about science/reason vs. faith/spiritualism. (Lost- Locke and Jack, SH- Harry and Dahlia, Heather and Claudia)

8 – Characters stay in areas that hold more questions than answers. (Lost-the hatch, SH4-Henry’s apartment)

9 – Drugs play a heavy role in the back story of events that have or will occur in the area, also in the way certain people behave. (Lost- Charlie and Mr. Eko, SH- Dr. Kaufmann, the Cult)

10 – There seems to be objects carefully placed at still very random and odd locations. (E.g. Lost-The black roc and the 2nd half of the DHARMA video, SH-a lot of things connected to the puzzles in the games, some of which play a large part in the story as well)

11 – Mind games and Holes “going down somewhere unknown” is a reoccurring thing in both Lost and Silent Hill. Both portray it in a way that may be interpreted as diving into the character’s own mind, as if the person is about to realise something. (E.g. Lost- Hatch and the Staff hatch, Silent Hill- Holes: “There is a hole, will you jump into it?”)

12 – It’s a small world, most (or maybe even all) characters have something to do with each other one way or another before the events of the series’. (E.g. Lost – We’ve seen this on several occasions in flashbacks, SH – the superintendent and James Sunderland, Walter Sullivan and Dahlia Gillespie.)

(13 –There is a fat guy in both series and he whinges about his weight a lot. I mean, how many times do you see fat people in mainstream entertainment? Ok, maybe this one doesn’t count; I thought I might mention it anyway.)

What do you think?
