Transmissions

This week’s episode got me thinking again about why they wouldn’t try to track down the source of the French looping transmission. It would seem likely that there may be other things (in addition to the transmitter itself) in a location that houses and powers such a transmitter for 16+ years that they could possibly make use of. Seems like it would at least be worthwhile to track it down, and maybe that’s what they’ll do using the new radio.

Superbowl Lost reference?

Madden mentioned at the beginning of the superbowl this year that they reserve 108 footballs for use in the game, so that they can use a fresh one in every play. Is this a Lost reference, or just a really weird coincidence? Seems like kind of a weird number to be chosen…

LOST-like books?

Anybody know of any books that cover similar territory of LOST? I’ve heard that the writers were influenced by Stephen King’s “The Stand” which I have not read.

Lost mania

Here’s my take on the hype surrounding this show, and why I think it’s OK, to an extent. (Quoted from a comment I made on my blog):

Sure there are a lot of people out there going to great lengths to uncover the mysteries behind the story, but I don’t think that’s too abnormal for a very well written and thought out sci-fi/mystery story, which is exactly what this is.

The only difference is that instead of being in a book form (which relatively few people as a % of the population would take the time to read) it’s on TV, so it’s a lot easier for people to get into. Therefore, there are a lot more people discussing it. This is one of the main reasons (IMHO) that I think the show is such a hit, because there really aren’t any other TV shows out there that are doing this kind of good extended storyline. (I added the “good qualifier since soap operas do have extended plots as well, but they are a different genre of story, and I’m guessing aren’t written or directed this well).

Of course, this is also the downfall of the show (the only negative, in my opinion): because it is such a story as would be told in a good book, you can’t just pick it up and start in on chapter 8. Luckily the previous videos are available in various forms, so it’s easy for those who want to start in on it to do so, but it does require a bit of time. Personally, I never watched it until the end of season one, after hearing so many good things about it but figuring it was all hype. Then I caught one rerun ep on TV, and it did interest me, so I went back and downloaded everything and eventually caught up, but it definitely took me a while, and it’s only going to take longer for new viewers to get up to speed as the episodes pile up. I’m in the process of making my own personal DVD sets of all the eps so far, so that I can quickly loan them out to friends who want to catch up, but that’s about all I can think of to do.

Like anything with this type of following in the age of the Internet, there are people who will end up overanalyzing every little detail, “uncovering parts of the story that were not even really there, but that’s part of what makes it fun, and why we started the blog about it - to discuss all the crackpot theories and come up with some of our own.

The Lost Hurley/Walt comic translated.

lost comic

This is a translation of the comic that Hurley and Walt are reading in the 1st season.

I haven’t been able to make it through all of this, but it seems to fit pretty nicely in the “Ultimate LOST Theory” of which I am quite fond of.

Biggest spoiler ever…

Don’t read if you really think someone that is an insider at ABC would really post something like this. I have my doubts, but most of this is pretty right on. here is the original link

from Meks on www.4815162342.com:
Sorry for the long-post again guys. Just read this on another forum, and I thought I would share with you season 2 peeps…Some of it makes a lot of sense…However, I think people are starting to put their theories in a different format now…They always start with, “I have an insider who told me”…It just gives the theory an extra edge…..Take them all with a pinch-of-salt…

Anyway, here it is…..
I work for a news website, one like AICN, except it is *NOT* AICN (sorry, can’t tell its
name)

Anyways, got some real interesting info from a guy who claims to be a “hacker”. For the record: he’s provided us with legit scoops before.

Here’s the interview:

(again, take it with a spoon full of salt. Can’t be sure about any of this - all I can say
is that the mole himself is legit)

LOST COMPLETELY SPOILED

Q: Okay, so… What is Lost all about?
A: Forget all the nanorobots, telekinesis, multi-dimension crap. It is: King James’ Bible, meets The Matrix, meets The Village, meets Survivor, meets Saw, meets Lord of the Flies, meets The Suspects, meets 2001… But there’s NOTHING supernatural about it.

That’s a good enough start

for today. I just had some mental notes that I wanted to put down on here before I forgot about them, and to get other people’s opinions on them.

I’ll try to post more in-depth theory stuff later on.

The sickness

My current theory on “the sickness” that is rumored to have overtaken the French crew (and I suspect Russeau as well) is somehow an affect (intentional or not) of the mental manipulation that seems to happen to everyone on the island, to varying degrees. Whatever it is, it definitely got Michael, as he was really freaking out before he left to go after Walt, whereas he is normally a really calm person.

Others

There are all sorts of interesting things to consider about the people that the castaways refer to as “the others”. I’ll start by saying that I currently believe that there are at least two distinct groups of “others” on the island, which I believe are somehow at odds with each other as well as the castaways.

I think one group is with the bearded guy (from the boat, who took Walt) and the other is the “nature lover” group, whose feet we see walking on the path while Eko hides in the bushes. I’m not sure which groups all the “other others” we’ve seen are/were from, like Ethan and Goodwin, although it seems that Ethan did not come from “Zeke”’s group.

Then there are people like Desmond, who I’m really interested in seeing what they do with, since I think he may have been being used by (but not a part of) one or the other (or both) groups of others, or the remaining scientists who may still be around but not a part of either “other” camp described above. Now I think the castaways are in that position of being used/manipulated, whatever the goal may be. It involves keeping them pushing the button somehow, whether that actually does anything useful or whether it’s a part of a larger psychological experiment.

Eko

I’m wondering where they’re going with having Eko misquote or otherwise communicate scriptural stuff incorrectly. His explanation of John’s baptism of Jesus was kind of jacked, and when he recited the 23rd Psalm, he said “shadow of the valley of death” instead of “valley of the shadow…”.

I am certain that these are intentional (not just oversights or mistakes), so I’m wondering if it’s just to play into characterizing him as not having a great understanding of things yet, in spite of his recent apparent conversion, or if they’re going somewhere else with it.

One interesting note that may be related in some way to Eko is that when Eko first enters the hatch, Locke is working on a crossword puzzle where the answer is Gilgamesh, from an old Babylonian legend. This is one of many weird references on the show which may or may not mean anything. There is some interesting theory out there that somehow relates to King Josiah and a city of refuge where people who had killed could come to avoid revenge.
